Brazing has a similar outcome to soldering in that it helps to create a strong joint between two different base metals without having to melt or break down the individual components. The process of brazing is the process of bringing together two separate metals with a metallic filler, which is referred to as the braze, which will flow over the joints and then create a bond that can be relied upon. This method is a great way of creating a bond that can be very difficult to see, it can be utilised at a great range of heats and temperatures and it is also possible to twist, jolt and shake the bond without compromising the quality of the join.
While brazing is similar to soldering, there are differences with respect to the temperatures and metal. Brazing is a great tactic when there is a need to bolster together different shapes and configurations with joints that are much more linear in fashion. This is one area where brazing carries a notable improvement over soldering. The fact that rods, pipes and all manner of metal shapes can brazed as long as the different pieces are able to be fitted neatly to each other makes this a great strategy to use when bringing different forms of metal together.
Before the process of brazing gets underway it is important to ensure that the area around where the joint will be has been properly cleaned. If it is not properly cleaned, there will be a clumping of braze around this area which means that the joined created will be inconsistent. After the area has been washed, a melted flux should be applied to it. The use of the flux is to ensure that oxides are removed because this will ensure that an oxidation process does not occur during brazing which will help to ensure that the surface remains smooth and that the braze will be applied evenly.
Why is brazing used with Tungsten Carbide?
Given that brazing is a highly reliable and effective way of forming two metals together, it is understandable why this is the option chosen when tungsten carbide is added to another metal. There are many positive elements and uses from tungsten carbide so it makes sense that it will be of value in certain products without having to comprise the entire product.
A great example of this will be a saw where tungsten carbide can be brazed on to steel. The tungsten carbide on the points or tips of the saw or other tools provides a large benefit down to the fact that it will remain sharper and a lot more reliable than steel or other metals. There is also a lot to be said for utilising tungsten carbide when there will be a lot of abrasion at the point of the tool. Advances in technology in the 1980s means that brazing is now seen as a reliable way of bringing two metals together and this means that tungsten carbide can effectively applied to other metals without any fear of breaking or damage.
How is brazing performed and achieved?
The first part of the process is to ensure that the steel (or whatever metal you are adjoining to the tungsten carbide) area is clean and then you should be looking to coat the area with flux. Black flux is commonly used although other types of flux are available. Your brazing alloy should be cut to the right shape and you should be looking to coat it in a layer of your flux for brazing. The next step is to the place your cleaned tungsten onto the flux and then cover this with a layer of brazing flux. The part should be held in place during the brazing period with a rod and you should aim to heat the entire part equally until the joint is at the required temperature.
This can be a difficult process because the part needs to be hot enough for its entire length, which may be difficult when dealing with small sections or parts. You should get an indication that the parts are of a sufficient temperature when the alloy converts into liquid. When this stage occurs, you should move the part slightly which will allow any flumes to make their way out but be careful not to shake the part too hard. You will be able to remove the flux with warm water.
